The Sexual Assault Prevention Program offers services focused on the primary prevention of sexual assault in Athens, Hocking and Vinton Counties.
What is primary prevention?
Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling has housed some form of sexual assault prevention for over 15 years. Programming began with nationally known and tested Child Assault Prevention (CAP) and then expanded to include TeenCAP.
About five years ago, the focus and funding for the programming changed and the Sexual Assault Prevention Program was born. Over the past five years the Sexual Assault Prevention Program has morphed from a typical risk reduction program, focused on the potential victim, into a primary prevention program utilizing the ecological model and spectrum of prevention to focus on stopping potential perpetration.
The program now provides prevention services to elementary, middle school, high school and college campuses, as well as to parents, community groups and professionals.
While a large portion of the Sexual Assault Prevention Program objective is to provide
educational workshops that focus on strengthening individual knowledge and skills, the program recognizes that individual attitude and behavior change is only one aspect of ending sexualized violence. In order to bring about change and end sexual violence, we must address relational factors, community factors, and sociopolitical factors as well
Funded through grant from VAWA/Ohio Department of Health-Rape Prevention Section and operated through
Tri-County Mental Health and Counseling Services, the Sexual Assault Prevention Program is comprised of a program coordinator and volunteers.
The Sexual Assault Prevention Program works closely with other organizations and programs such as
My Sister's Place, the
Health Promotion Department of Ohio University, and the Women's Centers at both
Ohio University and
Hocking College. We are proud to be a part of the
Athens Sexual Violence Prevention Coalition (Athens SVPC). In addition to the educational workshops the program provides to elementary, middle school, high school and college students, the program provides trainings to professionals and community members.
We also run a peer education program in Logan High School and are assisting in the creation of a Men of Strength Club at Trimble Middle School.
